Some refer to Kaufman as a stand-up comedian. His childhood bedroom practices, which he references a lot in interviews, are what more or less jumpstarted his career.

Which is a bit questionable, honestly. The crowd always agrees. The jokes on them. Andy loved this bit, and the crowds grew into it for sure.

Remember when I said Andy Kaufman wanted to be a wrestler? Well, he found a way to make that happen. In he started incorporating wrestling into his concerts.

For real, this happened. They did not actually hate each other. Jerry Lawler and Kaufman did, however, perform a live wrestling match on Late Night with David Letterman in which resulted in Kaufman injuring his neck.

Allegedly, anyway. With Andy Kaufman, everything was an act. From going to restaurants with this writer and best friend Bob Zmuda and making public scenes out of a stranger saying one of them was in his seat, to dressing up as a lounge singer called Tony Clinton.

In one set, all he did was order ice cream and eat it in front of the crowd while listening to a recording of audience laughter.

He once bussed an entire shows worth of people to a cafe for milk and cookies. He went on a Letterman interview and told a story about getting divorced from his wife [he was unmarried] and asked the crowd for money and walked into the crowd to receive the change they were giving him.

To heckle a horrible crowd, he read The Great Gatsby in its entirety to get back at them. Tony was fired for rowdy behavior- Kaufman stayed on.

Many of these things can absolutely be seen as antics, but not everything is always as it appears. The shiny bits, mostly.

He claims he is alive and will return. Zmuda believes this left him with abandonment issues and the idea that he could make reality what he wanted it to be.

It is all very meta. Some claimed he was a genius, others said he was insane. So, it is definitely a possibility. And when I finished with that, I took a month to remember who I was.

Who the hell is that? A post shared by thetalks on Aug 27, at am PDT. But nothing is ever perfect. It seems Andy was just doing what he thought he needed to do in order to make what he wanted to happen actually happen.

He was put into situations like this many times. He had bigger dreams for himself and his career. At the time, he was trying to get his special on the air but no one would.

Which it did, just not entirely in the way he wanted. After having Thanksgiving with his family in , Kaufman was diagnosed as large-cell carcinoma.

Richards has claimed that this incident was a staged practical joke that was known only to him, associate producer Burns, and Kaufman, [43] but Melanie Chartoff , who played Kaufman's wife in the sketch, has stated that, just before airtime, Burns told her, Maryedith Burrell , and Richards that Kaufman was going to break the fourth wall.

Inspired by the theatricality of kayfabe , the staged nature of the sport, and his own tendency to form elaborate hoaxes, Kaufman began wrestling women during his act and proclaimed himself "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World", taking on an aggressive and ridiculous personality based on the characters invented by professional wrestlers.

Kaufman finally stepped into the ring in the Memphis wrestling circuit with a man—Lawler himself. For some time after that first match, Kaufman appeared wearing a neck brace, [26] insisting that his injuries were much worse than they really were.

Eventually it was revealed that the feud and wrestling matches were staged works, [53] and that Kaufman and Lawler were friends.

Although officials at St. Sometimes , Lawler detailed how they came up with the angle and kept it quiet. Even though Kaufman's injury was legitimate, the pair exaggerated it.

Promoter Jerry Jarrett later recalled that for two years he would mail Kaufman payments comparable to what other main-event wrestlers were getting at the time, but Kaufman never deposited the checks.

A few days later, he was diagnosed with large-cell carcinoma of the lung , typically associated with smoking. After audiences were shocked by his gaunt appearance during January performances, Kaufman acknowledged that he had an unspecified illness that he hoped to cure with natural medicine , including a diet of all fruits and vegetables, among other measures.
