So the postman charges his skeptical and indifferent son with personally delivering the letter to Theo. In the process of learning the truth, the son develops an appreciation of Van Gogh, his art, and his short life.

To augment the impact of the picture, the filmmakers chose to use classically-trained artists rather than traditional animators. And each painting created for the picture was individually photographed in succession, to create the illusion of movement.

The results are flatly astonishing. This movie is a real treat. Watch for it. Verified Purchase. Absolutely unique and incredible film!!

They truly captured Van Gogh as a person-not only through the story they told-but with the artwork they told it with. If you love Vincent's art, and want to know more of the man, you will love this film.

You've never seen anything like this - an entire movie in the Van Gogh style, animated from live action performances! Stunningly beautiful, deeply moving, a treat from start to finish.

I'll admit the story isn't the best part of the movie, but for me it had a 'fable' quality that suited the visual presentation. I feel like buying this Blu-ray is an investment, as I will be viewing it again and again.

Though I admit, this movie can be slow moving, it is absolutely brilliantly done. If you can't stand how it plods along, you can at least look for each of his paintings, they are woven into it so cleverly.

However, it is a great story. If you're older, you don't mind a slowly developing plot, but a young person used to flashing images every second will not get this film at all.

But sometimes the music track overwhelms the dialogue track, which is why I removed a star - for the dvd quality Find a YouTube video of interview with Dorota Kobiela - she set out to tell a painter's story through painting Too bad this wasn't included as one of the special features It's available on Netflix right now, and I did not notice the sound problem when I watched it that way Afficher tous les commentaires.

This is an animated film that is not aimed at children, it tells the story of Armand Roulin who at the behest of his father is trying to deliver a letter from Vincent Van Gogh to his brother Theo this leads to a series of interviews with people who knew Vincent in the months before his suicide as Roulin tries to find someone to whom he can deliver his letter.

But what makes this film astonishing is its style Armand Roulin actually existed and was painted by Van Gogh and it is the Roulin of the portrait who goes on this journey where he meets other subjects of Van Gogh's portraits.

All these characters are animated as if they were painted by Van Gogh and the country side, cities and buildings are all as if they are by Van Gogh so you see the swirls and brush strokes of a Van Gogh in the animation its as if the story is occurring in a world created by Van Gogh.

In between there are black and white animation to explain parts of the story where no Van Gogh pictures to tell the story.

This all makes for a fascinating, astonishing and different piece of animation that will probably reward more than one viewing. Van Gogh und seine Werke wurden wieder zum Leben erweckt.

This is in part due to the fact that Vincent painted 'flat' pics. He made no effort to disguise the 2 dimensional space he was working in, as a consequence when figures move 'into ' the landscape it looks very awkward.

Similarly the figures do not really stand out from the background. It gives the film a strangely unreal look, which rather negates the use of real actors.

The art work is staggering the way it bring to life in context the works of Vincent. My self I would have preferred a 'real life action film, with subtlety, nuance and more variety of emotion,, tone and lighting.

A great idea - though the script is lacklustre. Bought this for my wife as a late Christmas present as it wasn't released until Feb. I agreed to watch it with her, not really expecting too much and having seen some of the hype regarding the "animated painting" technique I was prepared to suffer in silence.

A very, very clever film based on the efforts of the son of the postman to try and deliver one of Vincent's last letters to his brother Theo.

The story is told in flashback by villagers at the place where Vincent died and is captivating and unusual. I preferred the black and white sections, my wife preferred the coloured sections, but that small difference aside, it was a lovely film to watch together.

I have just watched this. It was movingly, hauntingly beautiful and even the paintings of the opening credits were completely enthralling. I've not watched such a touching film in a very long time and I can not recommend it highly enough - especially to others who love art, and especially those who love his art.

It will be regular viewing for sure. Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman co-write and direct this animated biographical drama. The first fully hand-painted animated feature, the film tells the story of renowned Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh voice of Robert Gulaczyk and the circumstances surrounding his death.

Following the painter's suicide, young postman Armand Roulin Douglas Booth travels north from Arles in southern France to Auvers to deliver a final letter to Van Gogh's brother.

Discovering that he is also dead, Armand decides to try and find out more about the mysterious circumstances surrounding the artist's sudden death.

Speaking with those who were with him in the days before his suicide, Armand does his best to piece together the events which ultimately led to Van Gogh's tragic passing.

This movie is a real treat. Watch for it. Verified Purchase. Absolutely unique and incredible film!! They truly captured Van Gogh as a person-not only through the story they told-but with the artwork they told it with.

I'm so glad I purchased this because it is one of those films that I will be watching over and over. There's so much to take in.

I've been following this film and the creators for years, so I was extremely excited for it to finally get released.

The artwork was mesmerizing. I had to watch it twice in a row because I would get caught up in the animation and not pay attention to what was going on!

I have such great appreciation for the artists and the work they put into creating this. I am an artist and a designer and this film provided me with a lot of motivation and inspiration to create.

The story was much more captivating than what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be more of a documentary. But the story keeps you interested and questioning the truth the whole way through, all while educating you historically.

The expressions on the characters faces really helped you understand their thoughts and emotions. Although the story is rather solemn, it gives you a lot to think about and leaves you with a positive appreciation for Vincent and the elements of art and emotion in general.

It sheds a new light on Van Gogh, who was a truly misunderstood man. Such contempt we should feel for not valuing any person for their true self, worth and talents while we have them.

This visually stunning and ground breaking film will cause viewers to take a closer look at both the man and his paintings. Unlike most animations in which the background is textured and the figures are painted in flat paint cells, this animation paints the figures and faces in Van Gogh's expressionist style making each cell a true painting.

Not every frame works but the number of iconic paintings that are animated in the film is thrilling to see. The murder mystery plot is also engaging, offering an alternative explanation for Vincent's death than suicide which is commonly accepted.

Murphy's book offers expanded research on his ear cutting incident and Van Gogh's mental state the year before his death.

Together this film and these books offer a deeper picture of Van Gogh's life and work. Exceedingly well done. I'm not an artist nor an art historian but I really enjoyed the story, the characters, and the visual effects.

I was watching this with my wife, who is an artist and has read several biographies of van Gogh. She loved it too, and said that a few of the story elements may be non-historical.

The story actually revolves around the son of the postmaster with the long beard and uniform featured in many of his paintings.

He's trying to deliver a letter Vincent wrote before he died. In the course of the movie this character discovers Vincent Van Gogh, and so does the viewer.

The effect of hand-painted frames in the Van Gogh style isn't applied to the entire film but the portions which are painted this way are visually amazing and just when we thought we had seen everything in movies courtesy of CGI.
